Active members of the Gaston County Lodge can display a Fraternal Order of Police civic club license plate on vehicles registered to the member. Issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, the cost of these plates is $30 per year, compared to $20 for a standard plate, and $40 for a personalized plate. After you receive your plate, the $30 will be paid each year when you renew your plate.

The Fraternal Order of Police-Legal Plan, Inc. is an optional program created by the National Fraternal Order of Police. The program is designed specifically to cover the law enforcement exposures faced by members.

The Legal Plan pays legal defense costs on behalf of participating members for the following actions and proceedings:  administrative, civil and/or criminal.

Coverage is provided when a participant is acting within the scope of their law enforcement employment duties. For the law enforcement professional, duty related legal defense protection is a necessity as the frequency and cost of allegations against officers continues to rise. The FOP Legal Plan offers active members a very affordable and comprehensive coverage plan.

The NCA's exclusive program offers qualifying FOP members significant discounts off automobile, homeowners and life insurance rates.

NCA is a highly specialized agency that has served the law enforcement community for more than 40 years and has achieved a reputation that is unsurpassed. Their successful history serving the families of law enforcement has enabled them to expand into 44 states and to serve many different law enforcement agencies and organizations throughout the nation.

Convenient billing methods are available including monthly bank account deductions, direct billing and payroll deduction for participating agencies.

There is no cost to the NFOP and our members could receive anywhere from a 10% to 20% reduction in tuition and/or credit for past degree work, POST training and FBI Academy training.

None of the universities or colleges have a campus visit or residency requirement nor do they require the GRE/GMAT tests.

The Fraternal Order of Police University (FOPU) is a consortium of colleges and universities who will provide members of the Fraternal Order of Police with multi-varied learning programs. These programs are traditional and non-traditional forums.

The formation of FOPU allows members the ability to take courses which will accommodate the unique necessities of a working law enforcement officer's schedule. These courses can be taken on-line which will make it easier for our members to obtain their degrees. All the colleges and universities who are participating are accredited institutions.

on law enforcement labor issues including progress on legislation from our advocacy center in Washington, D.C.

North Carolina Police Officer is published three times each year. Each issue contains reports from our state leadership, along with articles of interest from local lodges, and updates on legislative issues.

The BlueNote is a Web-based publication that updates members on the activities of the North Carolina State Lodge, along with local lodge news.

Members of the Fraternal Order of Police receive news and information from several sources, including FOP Journal - our national newspaper; North Carolina Police Officer - our state magazine; the BlueNote - our state Web publication, along with the national, state and local lodge Web sites.

The FOP Journal, published six times a year, is the official publication of the National Fraternal Order of Police. Each issue contains reports from the Grand Lodge executive board and various committees, articles of interest from local lodges, updates

In keeping with our continued commitment to effective labor services, the committee also seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex legislation impacting law enforcement officers — knowledge crucial to establishing protections from unfair labor practices.

The Education Services Committee is responsible for the development and implementation of professional law enforcement training programs and events. Our goal is to maintain the highest standard in providing quality education and excellence in training.

The Fraternal Order of Police is committed to equipping law enforcement professionals with the necessary skills needed to enhance their career development and quality of life.

Because of training and experience, law enforcement officers are safer drivers; they have fewer accidents and file fewer claims. As a result, it costs the insurance companies less to insure them than it does to insure others. For that reason, FOP members deserve lower automobile insurance rates.

The Fraternal Order of Police insurance program is available in most states and offers nationally recognized, financially strong insurance carriers that provide discounted rates exclusively through this program.

Active or retired FOP members and their immediate families are eligible to participate in the program.

Other coverage available through the National Computers Agencies, Inc. include: motorcycle, boat, RV, personal umbrella, flood, antique/classic cars, motor homes, snowmobiles and personal watercraft.

The Fraternal Order of Police Legal Defense Plan is offering HR-218 coverage for FOP active and retired law enforcement officers.

Legal defense coverage will be provided for civil or criminal claims associated with HR-218 – Federal Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004.

The annual coverage limit will be $15,000 at a cost of $50 per participant. If you are currently a participant of the Fraternal Order of Police Legal Defense Plan, coverage for HR-218 is automatically included.

The Moonlighting Liability Insurance Program protects individual law enforcement officers who perform extra duty jobs. In addition to protecting the officer, coverage is extended to the non-governmental entity that has contracted the officer’s services.

By offering protection to the extra duty employer you have a distinct marketing advantage over other programs, which may not extend coverage to the hiring entity.

The plan provides a $100,000 to $500,000 limit of liability including legal defense costs for claims alleging bodily injury, property damage or personal injury while working any authorized off duty job. The cost of the program depends on the amount of liability coverage, from $198 to $595.

The North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police Death Benefit Program is protection against financial loss resulting from death. It is the North Carolina State Lodge's promise to pay your beneficiary a specific amount of money when you die in exchange for keeping your membership in good standing.

A basic benefit of $3,000 will be paid for a death by natural causes. Beneficiaries will receive $6,000 in the event a member suffered an accidental death. In the case of a line of duty death, the beneficiary would receive $9,000.

Military personnel assigned to law enforcement duties are covered under the natural and accidental portions of the coverage.  Should a line of duty death occur, the State Lodge would pay that portion of the coverage only if the death was related to the law enforcement function.  The line of duty benefit will not be paid if the death occurred either in a combat situation or any military situation not related to the law enforcement function.

To become eligible for lifetime membership in the Death Benefit Program, law enforcement officers must maintain continuous membership in the North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police at least five years prior to retirement, unless the individual retired due to an unforeseen disability through the law enforcement retirement system.

The Blue Line 457 Plan is a union-sponsored deferred compensation program provided exclusively to Fraternal Order of Police members. The FOP has chosen to partner with ICMA-RC to provide this program to members.

Deferred compensation is a program that allows you to invest today for your retirement. Federal and (in most cases) state income taxes are deferred until your assets are withdrawn, usually during retirement when you may be in a lower tax bracket. You can contribute up to $15,000 of your salary.

All active members currently employed by and providing service to state or local government entities are eligible to participate in the Blue Line 457 Plan if their lodge and employer have agreed to offer the program. Unfortunately, FOP members providing service for the federal government are not eligible to participate.

Through the Blue Line 457 Plan, you are able to invest in a full range of investment options including actively managed funds, index funds, target-date funds and risk-based funds. You may specify your investment allocation at the time of enrollment. If no allocation information is provided on the enrollment form, contributions will be invested in the VantageTrust PLUS Fund. The VantageTrust PLUS Fund (the “PLUS Fund”) is a stable value fund that invests in investment contracts issued by financial institutions.

Participating in the Blue Line 457 Plan is voluntary and offers many benefits including:

  • You reduce your current income taxes while investing for retirement.

  • Your earnings accumulate tax-deferred.

  • You can dollar cost average through convenient payroll deductions.*

  • You may be allowed to make additional “catch-up” contributions if you are 50 (or older) or within three years of your normal retirement age and already contributing the maximum to your plan,

  • It’s portable. If you change jobs, you can consolidate your savings in another public sector employer’s 457 plan, a qualified 401 plan, a tax-sheltered 403(b) annuity plan, or a Traditional IRA.

  • If you retire or leave service early, there is no penalty for withdrawals.

  • Supplemental investments are helpful in states and communities where no contribution is made to Social Security.
